WOMAN OF SOCIETY She attended charity soirees In borrowed dresses And Nobbed with the Hobbs A Woman of Society Her teeth shone brighter Than her one-karat Diamond She had exchanged For her original wedding ring She traded in friends For stepping-stones Social climbing a pastime With no concern who she treaded upon If it happened that she entertained She served homemade wine And exchanged the empty bottles for dimes That she carefully put in her designer purse But her frugality soon turned miserly Saving coins for a rainy day Picking up a free lunch From people here and there While she sought sympathy Everywhere she went Sad eyes could cry on command If it meant she’d gain a helping hand I call her vampire For she sucked the blood Of those who cared most And left behind a carcass of friendship In the wake of her monetary designs ~Nora Millicent Parker
