When the spirits are restless
You shall be, too.
Your bed is a machine
Whirring and tossing you.
Tangling sheets strangle your feet.
Your eyes on fire.
Apparitions from long ago
Make their presence known.
Jolted consciousness!
It’s Alice again
And you must drink the tea.
Hares and Queens tempt you
With their hijinks.
Beg the spirits to make haste
So you can befriend the moon again.
Tireless desire rest, rest, rest.

let them co-exist
some might soothe too
some might resist.

February 19, 2022 at 10:48 amI’m reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and the opening of your poem reminded me of a chapter where one of the characters kept being visited by her ancestor in dreams. It made me think of our restless ancestors and generational trauma.

February 19, 2022 at 4:44 pmYes, indeed. Well, I’m flattered that my poem was reminiscent of such an author. Thank you so much, Chrys. Now, I’m going to check out that book 🙂

February 9, 2022 at 1:41 amThis is a beautiful poem, Lisa. Brilliantly written. The full moon image goes so well with it too. Love the line ‘Your bed is a machine’. It made me think of how my bed is warm and inviting, and some nights I wonder why I still can’t fall asleep tossing around. And sometimes you fall into a restless sleep and you don’t know it…and it’s the ‘Hares and Queens’ in my dreams that make me think I am still awake.
The moon is our friend every phase of the way. You just got to work with its energies 🙂 Hope you are doing well, Lisa ❤

February 9, 2022 at 5:34 pmThank you so much, Mabel. Haha. Exactly. My bed is cozy, too but when the spirits are restless…and the dreaming is annoying. 🙂 I agree about the moon, Mabel. It is a powerful source of energy. Nice to see you!

January 20, 2022 at 12:23 pmBeautiful and profound! Lisa, the demons never leave, they keep coming in various forms.
“Apparitions from long ago
Make their presence known”… till you dilute them into poetry and let them wallow, till you stand aside and smile at their condition! 😊🤗
lisa
January 20, 2022 at 1:09 pmThank you so much, Balroop. Good point! Yes. I shall dilute them into poetry. They can wallow there! 🙂 xo
