If you’re home alone for the holidays, no need to despair. There are several inspirational lessons we can learn from young Kevin in the iconic Christmas classic movie—“Home Alone”.
I must apologize (or must I?) for two movie inspired blog posts in a row. First, The War of The Roses and now, “Home Alone”. It’s not that I’m out of ideas, it’s simply that I often come up with a blog idea while watching a favorite television show or movie. Here we have it;
1. You’re stronger than you think-kevin, having been taken care of all his seven years of life, finds himself fully responsible for himself and he rises to the occasion with imagination and curiosity.
2. When you eat alone-even if it’s only Kraft Dinner, it’s still worthy of a few candles and saying grace—because you’re worth it.
3. Use your imagination to up the security of your home-if you’re adjusting to living alone, naturally, you may feel a bit vulnerable in a home all by yourself. But there are measures you can take to increase security, and you don’t have to make a zipline from your upstairs window to the backyard tree house.
4. Turn on the lights-and you’ll see that what’s in your basement isn’t that scary after all.
5. Find joy in being alone-you have everything at your disposal and no one to tell you not to touch or use anything.
6. Family is complicated.
7. People are more than the rumors surrounding them and so are you.
8. “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” truly is the best seasonal song-if you choose to spin vinyl to power a dance party of mannequins? That’s your business.
9. We all make mistakes and sometimes we’re a “pain in the butt”.
10. The ones who love you will always come back for you.
11. Sometimes the good guy wins.
12. Always make sure your new toothbrush is approved by the American Dental Association.
Lessons and inspiration from little Kevin. If you’re alone this Christmas, don’t despair, dear Escapee. There are always people who love you and would be delighted to see you over the holidays. Reach out and let them know you’re home alone. Also, the church is open to everyone and just like Kevin, you may want to watch the choir rehearse for their big service. You never know who else may be sitting alone in a pew.
Happy Holidays my friends. Sending love your way. What other lessons did Kevin teach us? Share in the comments 🙂

January 9, 2019 at 5:36 pmThis was always one of my favorite holiday movies. When I’m home alone at night, I DEFINITELY turn on the lights. I don’t mind being alone during the day, but nighttime is a totally different story.

December 30, 2018 at 10:10 amThis is such a great post. I always loved how resourceful and brave Kevin was in that film. There’s definitely a lot we can learn from him, especially when it comes to facing our fears.

December 16, 2018 at 10:03 amOMG I LOVE THIS, Lisa!! First of all, this movie is one of my all-time faves, AND it was filmed in the town I was raised in! (I was actually an extra in the second Home Alone movie! SO fun!) That church Kevin goes to is my old church. My sister got married there! The entire movie has all our old stomping grounds in it. I just love that…
And these are FANTASTIC lessons to learn from that sweet adorable boy! My favorite is ten. LOL
Maybe we can add that no matter how much fear you have inside you when facing things alone, you can make it through some of the scariest moments and realize you are so much stronger than you ever believed you could be.

December 17, 2018 at 12:46 pmChris! That is so cool that you were an extra! Your childhood neighborhood is gorgeous. The church is beautiful, too and to think your sister married there and you spend your young years there every Sunday! 🙂 Yes, I love your LESSON, Chris. Such a good reminder.

December 14, 2018 at 8:45 pmI absolutely love that you draw inspiration from tv shows and movies and Home Alone is a great one! My goodness, I haven’t seen or thought about this one in ages but it really is the perfect Christmas movie. And “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” will always be a fav holiday song ❤️ Hope you are enjoying the season, Lisa! Xo

December 17, 2018 at 12:42 pmHey Charlotte, it’s a good one! We tend to think of it as a kid’s movie but it really is for all ages 🙂 Thank you, Charlotte!

December 13, 2018 at 8:14 pmha, to #12! I can hear his little voice saying it.
I so loved that movie as a kid and I still do. I mean it’s a classic for a reason. The inner alone versions of ourselves can do magical things!
(and not just booby trap a house fantastically)

December 17, 2018 at 12:38 pmYes! I like this: “The inner alone versions of ourselves can do magical things!” Thanks, Tamara!

December 13, 2018 at 1:21 pmI spent my first ever Thanksgiving alone this year. It was basically just another day since I had so much editing to do, haha. Next year, I hope to have my Good Samaritan act together and volunteer at a shelter. I could have had dinner at a friends house, but I opted out. Too many busy grandkids would be milling about!
lisa
December 17, 2018 at 12:36 pmWow, that must have been quite relaxing. Sounds like you didn’t miss it. good to hear you’re busy with your editing business, Jeri. Volunteering for the holiday would be amazing.

December 12, 2018 at 4:57 pmYes Lisa, family is complicated and some families get ruined due to one black sheep. Being alone makes us stronger, gives a lot of choices and absolute freedom. I have often felt alone even when my hubby is around because I can do whatever I want, cook whatever I like or not cook at all. Freedom is a great virtue!
lisa
December 13, 2018 at 10:27 amOne black sheep is not a bad thing, Balroop and sometimes they teach others but as we say—COMPLICATED. That’s good you can do what you want when you want, Balroop, and not have to cook if you don’t feel like it. Same at my house 🙂

December 12, 2018 at 1:08 pmAs you know from my Top 10 Movie posts I loved this one Lisa! 🙂 I will pick one and it relates slightly differently. Eating alone, not home, but out. Because of my anxiety I would NEVER eat out alone. Finally these past two years I got past that and do it all of the time! Have a great Wednesday my dear!! 🙂 🙂
lisa
December 13, 2018 at 10:25 amYes, I recall your blog post. I know you’re a movie buff, too. Good for you, Mike. It gets easier the more you do it, for sure. I remember when I first began doing that and when the hostess would ask “For one?”, I would feel a little embarrassed but that passed eventually. Now, when I get asked that I say ‘yes’ with a smile.

December 12, 2018 at 5:39 amWhat a great post, and definitely things to keep in mind, over the holidays and just in everyday life…I feel like sometimes we’re afraid or feel awkward to be or do things alone. It’s not always bad!

December 13, 2018 at 10:22 amIt takes practice to be alone, I believe. It gets easier the more time you spend alone. It’s not bad at all.
When it’s unexpected it can be tricky tho.

December 11, 2018 at 7:54 pmhappy holidays Lisa, one of the classic movies.
I’m spending time abroad and interestingly, family time in other parts of the world seems like holiday time all year round 🙂 Even if not the holidays, there’s plenty of gatherings, social events and family time! Where’s the wine 🙂
lisa
December 13, 2018 at 9:58 amHi Vishnu, oh that’s so nice! Exactly, where’s the wine? LOL. Cheer and hope you have a wonderful time, Vishnu!

December 11, 2018 at 10:49 amFamily is definitely complicated!
You know, I always found that the mac n cheese on Home Alone always looked so darn delicious! Like how did that kid make that…and all these clever little traps *as I stare at my ten year old who dumps half a box of cereal and an entire carton of milk into a cereal bowl.
lisa
December 13, 2018 at 9:48 amYES 🙂 Haha!! I bet your kid could survive VERY well if you left him home—by mistake—when you went to Paris—for Christmas!
