One of the best stress busters during divorce or any difficult time, is exercise. Any sweaty sport, activity or even a simple brisk walk can clear the mind of our negative thoughts firing. Sweat therapy I call it, because you get in the moment and forget all of the worries that are plaguing your mind and focus on what your body can do.
I have always been an exercise goer, from fitness classes to running. Two years ago I started ‘boot camp’ classes which were super challenging. Unfortunately, I was experiencing strange aches and injuries in the shoulder area so that was my excuse to stop that torture.
I also enjoyed spin class because of the sweat factor. I sweat the most in that kind of class, even more than during a run. Since we’ve moved to a new community I stopped going to those classes and fell back on my walk/run routine. I will always walk about 4x a week. The walk gives me time to think. I sometimes come up with blog ideas or writing scenarios while I’m walking. Besides, fresh air is the best medicine of all.
In late November I began yoga classes and was not sure if it was going to be for me. Since I’ve always enjoyed the fast paced sweatier activities. However, I have to say I’m becoming addicted to it. Now that I’m feeling stronger and more flexible and able to do the poses I want to go back for more. I just love the spiritual and body/mind connection of yoga. It has helped me cope.
I can’t think of a better time than post divorce, to learn something new.
Hiking
boxing
climbing
horse back riding
cross country skiing
kayaking
I have lofty goals but I know I will likely only try one of these things in the next few years. It’s too easy to sit in front of my computer…
One of the common mistakes when starting out, is that people think they have to do it everyday and also they think it will make them look like Kate Upton (or whomever the latest swimsuit model is). I can say this because I used to be a personal trainer and fitness leader. My experience with people is that they start exercising for the wrong reasons.
If you start exercising for the sweat therapy and mental health, you’ll be more successful. If you’ve never been an exercise goer and you begin with walking twice a week, you’ll be more likely to stick to it and actually enjoy it. Rather than setting high expectations, be realistic and you’ll be happier with your accomplishment.
What would you like to try? What is your favorite sweat therapy?

April 23, 2013 at 10:14 amI also love my yoga. I have stupid physical issues that have lately limited my exercise opportunities, but I love hiking, and plan to get back into it ASAP. Also, swimming or water aerobics is wonderfully fun and wonderfully good for you. *So* looking forward to swimming again my my pool is warm enough.

April 23, 2013 at 11:25 amThat sounds great! I forgot about the water aerobics and swimming. They can be great for anyone with joint issues and also just a nice change from land activities. Thanks Beverly, for sharing and enjoy your pool!.
