Are you feeling the Magic of the season? For me, it comes and goes. I have days where I’m meh about it all. Whatever, Santa’s no big deal.
And it’s just so damn dark all the time. Even though it’s been short days for almost two months, I’m still surprised when I look out the window to see that my day has been stolen. Like I have lost a sense of time for a split second. It could be either 5:30 pm or 8:30 pm because it’s pitch black outside. Thank goodness for mini twinkle lights, right?
And baby, it’s cold outside.
We’re approaching the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year. Do you celebrate the solstice more so than Christmas day? Winter solstice is beginning to hold more meaning for me as the years pass. Meanwhile, the importance of December 25th seems to be diminishing as I get older.
Nonetheless, getting back to magic. Do you find magic in the season? I find it in the strangest of ways. I also find it in the most obvious ways, too, like the over the top decorations at city hotels, or eggnog in my coffee. Chocolate, candy canes, and walking in freshly fallen snow (notice I said walking and not driving).
Of course, I could google this silly stuff, but I thought it would be more fun to ask you.
Wassailing; what is it? Is this an activity or a beverage? I’m thinking it may have something to do with singing
Baby Jesus’s mother is a virgin (allegedly). Raises hand in congregation, “Excuse me, but how is this possible?”
Fruit cake; why do people make this and who actually eats it?
Fa la la la, la, la la la… what does that even mean?
Gift cards; are they tacky or are they acceptable as a Christmas gift?
Egg nog; What is nog and how did it get its name?
Rudolph; if he is “the most famous reindeer of all”, then why are we asked if we’ve heard of him?
“A man is never poor, who has friends”, they said in It’s A Wonderful Life. But what if those friends always forget their wallet when you go out and you’re always stuck with the bill. Are your friends still preventing you from being poor?
If you have answers to any of these Christmas riddles, please tell me in the comments. 🙂
I enjoy a hit of some boozy, creamy drink poured into a martini glass. I will share my recipe for a Christmas drink that will knock your socks off.
ingredients:
6 oz rum
6 oz rye
6 oz brandy
1/2 pint whipped cream
3 cups of milk (low fat is fine)
1/4 cup of sugar
Combine alcohol, sugar and milk. Blend with whisk. Whip cream separately then fold into alcohol mixture. Pour into glass milk jug. Makes 2.5 litres (half of a large, plastic milk jug). Keep refrigerated. Stays good until milk expiry. Hint: if you use lactose free milk and cream, it will not expire as quickly, adding weeks to your enjoyment. Tastes great in coffee as well as on its own in a martini glass or shot glass.
Have a wonderful Holiday season, my friends.

December 22, 2022 at 10:53 amFor me, Lisa, fruit cake is a Yes!! Like humanity fruit cake can range from heavenly to hellish. Sometimes a little recipe tweak can make all the difference – more nuts if you like it nuttier – more fruit if you like it fruitier. Judging by the collective wisdom of this community – more booze is the most reliable tweak ;). Maybe enjoying the variety and differences between fruitcakes is the best approach – a journey of sorts. It’s true – some people just don’t like fruit cake. Oh well. For this season “may love and joy come to you”.

December 22, 2022 at 5:01 pmWow, so many fruit cake lovers. I am the weird one. Another riddle clearly solved. Your philosophical take on fruit cake is bang on. It all depends on the balance of ingredients. I say more booze and nuts (preferably almonds) than fruit. Ha. Merry Christmas to you, Kevin. Have a wonderful holiday break.

December 21, 2022 at 12:53 amHello Lisa,
Good to read you as I look outside and the cold in gone for a while, replaced by rain. Anyway Christmas tree is there to remind us that Christmas is close by, time for family to be together, it’s what I like best and the smiles of kids when they open their presents!
Friends are what make the words a better place. And there is nothing better than homemade gift cards, it feels like people took time to send love to you – at least you can keep it forever!!!
Wishing you lovely holidays Lisa
Stay well

I hope you have a lovely Christmas with your family and four-legged family. Poor Banksy. I hope he’s feeling better for Santa’s arrival. xxx

December 20, 2022 at 11:13 amI often make a batch of hot butter rum base to enjoy in the winter… I like fruit cake and have even made my own (it needs to soak in bourbon for a month or so, so none made this year). As for the virgin birth, I talked a bit about that in my sermon on Sunday.

December 20, 2022 at 12:09 pmHot butter rum sounds amazing. I have never made it myself. Another fruit cake maker!! That riddle is getting clearly answered 🙂
*lowers hand* I will read the sermon! Jeff, I was thinking after I wrote that riddle that you would have an answer for that. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

December 20, 2022 at 9:27 amWell, I bake a fruit cake with rum and orange juice and we eat it, even my grandchildren like it. 😊
Gift cards give momentary pleasure, also a good way to keep in touch with those dear ones who are far away though I don’t like the idea of such a gift.
Despite the bills, I would choose friends over money if I have plenty.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season Lisa. Thanks for sharing an innovative recipe! 🤗

December 19, 2022 at 8:23 pmMoose milk! My favorite animal!
I think gift cards make great gifts. I do feel like you – mostly meh lately. The darkness and cold are hard. That said, I have been celebrating Hanukkah and will be celebrating the solstice and then Christmas, and so much of that is about letting more light and love in.
